In the latest selection of Jazz tunes broadcasted on www.groovenarrels.org, we are happy to feature Southern Routes, a masterpiece from Michel Legrand, based on the soundtrack of the movie Les Routes du Sud. The music is played by an impressive big band that includes Gerry Mulligan and Ron Carter, among others. The track broadcasted on Groove’n Arrels has been selected by the DJ Gilles Peterson, and appears in the great recompilation Gilles Peterson & Patrick Forge Present Sunday Afternoon At Dingwalls.
Pianist, composer, and arranger, Michel Legrand has been one of the first European musicians to collaborate with the Jazz masters of the 20th century, like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, or Cole Porter among others. His passion for Jazz started in 1947 after he attended one of Dizzy Gillespie’s concerts. He has been very active in the motion picture industry, and has composed soundtracks for well-known movies such as Never Say Never Again. His arrangements have also largely contributed to disseminate French music. Enjoy!
